Spiro, it is great to hear from you. What have you been doing since we last saw you in VPW? |
Spiro - |
I wasn't happy with myself when I was in VPW last, so it was time to go back to the basics. I have re-invented myself and style. I studied a lot of Japanese wrestling( Hiroshi Tanahashi, Suwama), some old school British( Dynamite, Regal) and my favorites( Bret Hart, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle) and a few others. |
VPW Online - |
So are we going to some day soon see a new side to The Classic Superstar? |
 |
Spiro - |
Yes, you are!! I have one goal when I get into a ring and that is too show my opponent that I mean 100% business. No BS!! |
VPW Online - |
Have you kept up with what has been going on in VPW |
Spiro - |
I sure have. It has been great to see VPW getting bigger and better at every show. I enjoyed the beating Hardcore Holly put on Chris Andrews. But the one guy that needs to be shown what true wrestling is all about is the punk JAKE. |
VPW Online - |
Jake? The fans here love him. What is your problem with him? |
Spiro - |
My problem is that this is wrestling not gymnastics. And the fans are so blinded by his wrestlastics, that they have forgotten that this is one a BIG MAN's sport, and two it is WRESTLING. |
VPW Online - |
We know that Jake is actually a fan of yours and he says that studies a lot of your matches. |
Spiro - |
That is great!!! For you see when I get ahold of him and he thinks he is going to counter one of my moves, he is going to find a boot in the face or my knee driving his face into the canvas. Mark my words; Jakes' days are numbered. |
VPW Online - |
When will we see Spiro in VPW next ? |
Spiro - |
As of now I am shooting for Feb. to return back to England. |
VPW Online - |
So what does the rest of 2009 look like for Spiro? |
Spiro - |
I am looking to tryout for WWE in Dec. when they come to Texas. Also I have a match against former TNA star Petey Williams in Dec. A month ago I wrestled former TNA X-division Champion Matt Bentley in SCW. So Jake had better be hoping I get signed with either TNA or WWE before Feb... |
VPW Online - |
Well, Spiro thanks for your time and I know there are some fans here looking forward to seeing you once again. |
Spiro - |
See you soon. |

| VPW Online - |
You performed at Wrestlemania several times, most notably winning the Hardcore Championship match at ‘Mania 16 in a match where there seemed to be some confusion over the outcome? What actually happened there, and what was meant to happen? |
  |
| Hardcore - |
“Crash was meant to win but the buzzer didn’t go off. I shattered that container over his head and went for the cover. The ref, Timmy White, said to me as he was counting – “we’re going to hit this perfectly” and then the buzzer didn’t go off before his hand hit the mat for the three. I don’t know who messed up, all I knew was that it wasn’t me! You see that Timmy didn’t hit the mat on three because he was expecting the buzzer and after the match, Crash went to go get the belt, so we were just going through with the original plan but someone in the back must have been watching the monitor, realised that the whole thing looked shit and called an audible. I wasn’t expecting to be handed the belt.” |
| VPW Online - |
You didn’t look pleased after the match. |
| Hardcore - |
“I wasn’t! I thought “someone’s gonna catch some shit for this one”. They did try to lay it at my feet but I made sure they knew what I thought about that. It wasn’t a big deal anyhow, I just dropped the belt back to Crash the next night and that was that. It wasn’t hard to move that belt around.” |
| VPW Online - |
Moving forward a few years, how did the accident come about in the match with Brock Lesnar where you ended up with a broken neck? |
| Hardcore - |
“It was a simple case of an accident caused by inexperience. A lot of people have suggested that I didn’t co-operate with Brock on the powerbomb but nothing could be farther from the truth. If you look at the footage, you can see that I played my part in the move but the rotation didn’t go to plan. Brock should have put me back down on my feet but, instead, he decided to put me down on top of my head. He just wasn’t experienced enough to know how to handle a situation like it and, being absolutely honest, I’m not sure he realised the damage it would do to me. I reckon he thought it wouldn’t hurt that much if it happened to him, so just sort of dropped me without thinking of the consequences. He learned quick enough about neck injuries after his top rope move at Mania 19 though.” |
| VPW Online - |
Speaking of Lesnar, he came into the WWE when he was well below 30 and was pushed to the moon in what, in retrospect, seems like a bad decision. Out of the sub-30 year olds in the mainstream right now, who would you say is the best bet for future stardom? |
| Hardcore - |
“Nobody.” |
| VPW Online - |
Really? |
| Hardcore - |
“Yeah, there’s nobody there who has the dedication, the focus, the ability to tell a story – at least not at the level that they need to move into the upper level. Even if they did, they’d still have to deal with the current group of guys at the top anyway and I don’t see them moving for a while. John Morrison, for example, he’s good but it’s too early. He’s stuck at a level and he’s good where he is but he needs to focus and learn from the older guys to really click at the top level.” |
| VPW Online - |
What have you made of Chris Jericho since his return to the promotion? |
| Hardcore - |
“He’s a great wrestler and he’s proved just how great since he got back last year. Chris is one of my favourite people in the world – he’s a genuine guy and he’ll never stab you in the back the way that others would. John Cena is the same – just a straight up nice guy, no hidden agenda and one-hundred percent genuine. It’s a shame you can’t say the same for a lot of others in the business.” |
| VPW Online - |
Why do I get the impression this conversation is heading rapidly towards Ken Kennedy?! |
| Hardcore - |
“That m0th3rf#ck3r... he’s a dead man walking. I told VPW that if they get him on their show, I’ll not only work for free but I’ll fly myself in too. If I ever see him again, I’m going to jail, that’s all there is to it.” |
| VPW Online - |
So is it true then that he was instrumental in having you released from your WWE contract? |
 |
| Hardcore - |
“No, that’s not why I got released. He didn’t have any clout, he’s was a backstage joke. I left months after that whole deal with pills but when he turned me in for doing something he gave me permission to do, he broke the rules and threw me under the bus. You don’t do that to one of the boys, tell them that something is ok and then turn on them the moment that it looks like you might get heat for it. If that happens, you take it like a man and own up to what you did wrong. I guess he had done so many stupid things in the year before that he figured he couldn’t afford to do anything else wrong. Didn’t make any difference in the end, he only lasted a couple more months before they realised how sloppy and boring he is and got rid of his whining ass.” |
| VPW Online - |
If not Kennedy’s doing, why did you get released? |
| Hardcore - |
“Johnny Ace and I talked about it and I said I wasn’t happy continuing if I was just going to be used as a job guy. When you’re always putting some other guy over, you don’t get any programs, you don’t get to work pay per views and you don’t get to make the money. I felt they could have been using me much better, building to something with other guys and letting them learn from me over a period of time rather than just having some green newcomer go out there, get a quick win over me and then move on without learning anything. It doesn’t help anyone in the long run and sure didn’t help me. I told Johnny that I’d stick around if they were prepared to get behind me and start using me in a more meaningful manner. Well, turns out that creative weren’t, they had other priorities now, so I decided I’d be better off off-screen. The door is open though, there weren’t any bridges burned.” |
| VPW Online - |
Why do you think they didn’t do more with you? |
| Hardcore - |
“I have no idea. It’s something that Jericho would say to me often, he’d say he didn’t have a clue why they couldn’t use me more. I’ve been in the business for twenty years, I know how to tell a story, I’m safe to work with and the boys respect me but I guess they just don’t want to put over some people. Hell, even ‘Taker went to Vince to ask about doing an extended program with me but Vince shot the idea down.” |
| VPW Online - |
What do you think the problem is regarding creative? |
| Hardcore - |
“Well, here’s the thing. A lot of the internet and the wrestling fans get worked up with certain people, saying how a guy like Cena sucks and that’s fine. It’s their right to do so, they bought their ticket, they can do what they want but they don’t know the guy. As I said earlier, John’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met in my life period but a lot of people crap all over him. If creative didn’t worry so much about doing their scripted interviews and just took a little time with people outside of the ring, showed the fans who we all are, it’d be interesting and it’d get the boys over. You watch me on a show and you just see me wrestle. You draw your own conclusion. If you were to spend ten minutes with me backstage or at home, you’d have a different opinion. They should open that door and make it more real. It’d be something the fans would enjoy, especially since everything on TV seems to be about reality stuff now anyways.” |
| VPW Online - |
What advice would you give to people looking to get into the business? |
| Hardcore - |
“Realise three things from the word go – firstly, it’s hard work and you get out what you put in. Secondly, at some point or another, you’re going to get injured – deal with it. Thirdly, if you want to work for Vince, you can’t be normal. What I mean by that is that “normal” is what you see walking down the street. Nobody pays to see something they can see when they hang out at the local mall. The fans want to see characters and larger-than-life personalities. That’s why the giants and the big muscle men have always done well. They’re not your everyday guy – they’re something you pay to see because it’s out of the ordinary. New guys should always be thinking about what is going to make them different from everyone else. You can know all of the basics and be able to piece a decent match together but if you’re just the same as everyone else on the card and everyone in the audience, how are you going to stand out and capture anybody’s attention?” |
| VPW Online - |
What are you occupying yourself with these days in your post-WWE career? |
| Hardcore - |
“I’m fortunate enough to have had a long run with WWE and have been smart with my money so I don’t have to just go and work wherever the work is – I can afford to pick and choose. I don’t like to work with groups that have little respect for wrestling and just want to promote a human demolition derby without thought to the consequences for the wrestlers. I work some shows in the US when the promoter seems like a genuine guy and the talent is committed to putting on a good show. I’ve been abroad this year too, to Europe – in fact, I’m leaving tomorrow for England where I’m doing a couple shows with a group called VPW – Varsity Pro Wrestling – in Exeter on Wednesday 5th August and Portsmouth on Thursday 6th August. They’re a good all-round wrestling entertainment show, they all work hard, put on a value for money show and they’ve got a few real good home grown talents, most notably a guy called Chris Andrews – he’s a great wrestler and has a million dollar look” |
VPW Online - |
Have you worked with them before? |
Hardcore - |
“Yeah, I did a show with them earlier in the year, May – I wrestled the UK Kid, who was trained by Shawn Michaels. He’s a lot smaller than me but he’s tough – he actually broke one of my ribs in the first minute of the match!” |
VPW Online - |
So presumably you’re looking to settle the score with him?
|
|
“Well, it was meant to be a cage match between Kip James and the UK Kid on that last show but TNA needed to use Kip at short notice so they pulled him from the show. He gave me a call and I stood in for him. It ended up being a TLC match and I put the Kid in his place – right through a table. Maybe I’ll get my way and get him in a cage this time... I’ve been talking with my contacts over there; we’ll see what they can come up with!”
|
VPW Online - |
Backtracking a moment to going through tables – this reminds me of the match on ECW where you fought Rob Van Dam and took a nasty spill to the floor through a table that didn’t quite go as planned. No pun intended, can you flesh it out for us?
|
Hardcore - |
“Well, most of the time flesh is going to lose against metal! Most of the tables break on impact and the metal bends under your weight but on that occasion, it didn’t bend as much as I would have liked and ended up creating a pretty huge gash in my back. It ended up taking 24 stitches to close the wound.”
|
VPW Online - |
|
Hardcore - |
“I’ve had worse.” |
VPW Online - |
I’d imagine it can’t have been pleasant though!
|
Hardcore - |
“No, it wasn’t but the adrenaline was pumping and all I was thinking about was getting through the match. I thought it was one of my best matches and the crowd seemed to respect me for just getting on with it. That’s just what you’ve got to do. If I can walk, I’m going to finish the match. Hell, even if I can’t walk, I’ll still do my best! That’s just an attitude that you get in all of the good guys, the ones that are worth their paycheque.” |
VPW Online - |
An obvious question but one worth asking – what are your thoughts about the potential of a return to WWE?
|
Hardcore - |
“It’s a possibility and the door’s open on both sides for discussion. We’ll have to see how it goes and if they figure out a way to use me that suits them and suits me. They know what I can bring to the table. They’ve got some good experienced hands in there but as far as I’m concerned, the more experience you’ve got on hand, the better.”
|
VPW Online - |
What about a one-shot deal as a host on RAW or something more backstage, like a producer role?
|
Hardcore - |
“I think doing a one-shot deal as host would be a waste and I could bring a lot more than that to the show but working with the guys to put the matches together and teach the next generation would be interesting. I did a training seminar with VPW in May and will be doing another one this Friday. Working with guys just starting out is pretty rewarding and, as long as they’re willing to work hard and put in the effort, I’m happy to give them all I can to help them succeed.”

| VPW Online - |
Hi Jake, thanks for popping down to the VPW Office, I know you're very busy. |
 |
| Jake - |
That's cool man! |
| VPW Online - |
It's been quite a year for you since arriving in VPW. It's quite a step up for you, so how have you found the competition ? |
| Jake - |
WOW - Its been a year ! I have loved every minute of wrestling in VPW, and hope I have a long time left in this company. The competition in VPW has been tough, but I have the heart to compete with the best in England. |
| VPW Online - |
You mention your heart to compete, but are you still to pick up your first win in VPW ? Do you feel that first win is close to coming ? |
| Jake - |
I have a feeling that the big first win is coming, and its just a matter of time !! All I can say is watch this space. |
| VPW Online - |
How will things change for you once you have that first win under your belt. |
| Jake - |
I think it will make people begin to take me 'Jake McCluskey' seriously and not see me as just a little kid. |
| VPW Online - |
But you are VPW’s youngest star, so that must put extra pressure on you? |
| Jake - |
It does put pressure on me but that pressure makes me want to work even harder to prove that I can hang with the best in VPW. |
| VPW Online - |
So what are your long term goals in wrestling, what would you like to achieve? |
| Jake - |
My dream is to wrestle in America for one of the top companies in the world and make a name for myself. |
| VPW Online - |
How realistic do you feel those goals are? |
| Jake - |
You can do anything when you put your mind to it and I believe I can do it! |
| VPW Online - |
We spoke with The UK Kid a couple days ago - and 'gently reminded' him that you took him right to the wire - and almost beat him, as soon as he found out you were being interviewed for varsityprowrestling.com he had this to say about you. |
 |
| The UK Kid - |
“You are interviewing that punk?!? A 12 year old girl would be more interesting than Mr ‘Half wit’ - in fact I thought Jake was a 12 year old girl? Jake isn’t ready to lace my boots, I mean he hasn’t even started shaving yet! How dare you state that he came close to beating me! You listen to me you good for nothing bit of crap, that rookie couldn’t last 5mins with me let alone beat me!” |
| VPW Online - |
Do you have a response for the 'International Superstar'... |
| Jake - |
'UK Kid' you may have beaten me once or twice, but now I have been training harder and have more experience. I believe in myself and feel I’m more than ready. The next time we meet in the ring you will see I’m no push over. It is time for the UK Kid to back his ‘strong’ words. All I can say is "UK Kid - the tides are changing in VPW and I am positive I CAN beat you!" |
| VPW Online - |
I’m sure he will have something to say about that!?! |
| |
| Jake - |
Speak up then UK Kid ! ! ! |
| VPW Online - |
Before you go, it’s been noticed that the fans are really behind you. Do you have a few words for them? |
| Jake - |
The fans are the reason I wanted to be a wrestler, and the reason I am still wrestling today. When they get behind me I draw strength from them. I would just like to say thank you for supporting me it means so much. |
| VPW Online - |
Thanks, Jake and good luck in the future. |

Robbie Everest . . . . Click to read more
With Robbie we discuss his training at the VPW School Of Excellence, his appearances on The Fight Network, teaming with Kip James and D'Lo Brown and his upcoming visit to the United States.
VPW Online: Hello Robbie, thanks for finding the time to talk with us. Could you give our readers an update on what you've been up to since we saw you last on the February tour.
Robbie: No problem, I've been hitting the gym really hard since then, trying to improve my size, strength and agility. Being one of the smaller guys on the rosters isn't always easy, I've suffered a fair few loses to the bigger guys, like Chris Andrews. However I feel that now that I'm bigger and stronger, while retaining my speed, I'll stand a better chance against larger wrestler. That will certainly be an advantage when I wrestle across the pond with the companies I've been in negotiations with.
VPW Online: Yes, we read your announcement to the fans at VPW that you will be appearing on your first tour America soon. Can you give us any more information on this?
Robbie: Well, like I said in my announcement, I'll be over there for most of June representing VPW and the UK. So far I've gotten some dates in the Kentucky area with Ohio Valley Wrestling (the WWE development area where stars like John Cena, Randy Orton and Chris Masters worked), I got in contact with them through former WWE wrestler Eugene, who I met a couple of months ago at a show. I'm also in talks with TNA, but nothing is set in stone. I'd love the opportunity to wrestle for them and show whatVPW and the UK have to offer.
VPW Online: That sounds great Robbie, everyone here at VPW wishes you good luck. Now lets go back to the beginning, you were trained at VPW's School Of Excellence. Tell us about that. |
 |
Robbie: Without a doubt that was one of the most enjoyable times of my life. I trained there at the same time as Sam and Chris, the Andrews Brothers. We were a really tight group, all good friends, who wanted to learn about pro wrestling constantly. Without going to that school I really don't think I would have done half the things I've done in my two year career. Even though he was a tough teacher I'd like to thank The UK Kid for all the time and effort he put into training me and helping me become the wrestler I am today.
VPW Online: Yourself and The UK Kid have fought many times around the country, what's the score between you two now?
Robbie Everest [laughs]: He'd probably tell you otherwise but I think the score is currently 5-5. He was up 4-0 at one point but I knocked him back down, I pinned him twice in two important tag matches as well as knocking him out of the Exmouth cup this year. I really feel the need to step into the ring with him again to prove that the student has become the master.
VPW Online: We'd certainly like to see another match between the two. You mentioned defeating The UK Kid in tag matches, those were matches where you teamed with D'Lo Brown and Kip James. How did it feel to get your hand raised in victory along side two former WWE champions?
Robbie: Both moments I will never forget. When I tagged with D'Lo it was in Bridgewater last year, my family, my girlfriend and her family were all in the audience so it was a special night. I don't think I'll ever forget D'Lo telling me to climb to the top rope and hit a frog splash on The UK Kid after he had just used the same move. The match with Kip was great too, I got involved in that by helping him against LT Summers and The UK Kid. I got my backside handed to me but Kip returned the favour and managed to save the day. That was a great moment, as a child I used to watch Kip on TV and want to be just like him and the other WWE wrestlers.
VPW Online: What a lot of our readers may not know is that you have appeared twice on Sky channel 427, The Fight Network (formerly The Wrestling Channel).
Robbie: That's right, once was for Irish Whip Wrestling against current WWE star Drew McIntyre (Drew Galloway at the time), it was the third match in my career and was being recorded for TV so you can imagine how nervous I was. Drew defeated me but it was a great experience. The second time was in London, also early in my career, I lost then too.
VPW Online: Well don't worry, I'm sure you'll get a victory on TV one day. We're running out of time so I'll just ask one more question, one that many of our fans are wondering, will you be appearing on the tour in May?
Robbie: Yes I will be, and I can promise that I will walk through those curtains and give the fans everything I have to entertain them. I'm not sure who I'm facing yet but I know that I will be victorious in my last matches in the UK before heading to the USA. Also, I'd like to give a shout out to my tag team partner Johnny Goodtime, it looks like he'll be heading out to Japan soon, so congratulations mate.
VPW Online: Thank you for your time, Robbie. Makes sure you watch this space folks, as this young man is definitely going places. You can see Robbie in action on the tour in May, keep checking the VPW website for more information. |

VPW online managed to sit down with the self-proclaimed "International Superstar", The UK Kid, in the first of a series of interviews and online features with Varsity Pro Wrestling stars. With The UK Kid we discuss his past, present and future in professional wrestling, including training with WWE legend Shawn Michaels, what he feels has made him special enough to be called an "international superstar" and why he insists on making such an entrance during his live performances...
|
Click to play a short promo on the UK Kid, featuring footage from previous shows. |
VPW Online: Welcome UK Kid. Before we get down to business I want to ask what your views are on the newest additions to the VPW roster, Chris Mordetzky, formerly "The Masterpiece" Chris Masters.
UK Kid: Have you seen me in action? Do you think I actually care that Chris Masters is here in VPW? I've kicked Kip James' ass from pillar to post on many occasions, not to mention everyone else I've stepped in the ring with. Not that I have anything to worry about on the Masterpiece front. He and I have chatted on the phone a few times, he called to wish me a happy new year, we exchanged Christmas cards, the usual things we superstars do. But we have an understanding and that's pretty much all you need to know.
VPW Online: OK, well, for those who don't know, among Dory Funk Jr., and others, you were trained by WWE legend Shawn Michaels at the Texas Wrestling Academy. What can you tell us about that?
UK Kid: Well, I moved to San Antonio, Texas, when I was eighteen in April 2000 to train with my idol and get the best possible start in pro wrestling that I could. I had already trained in the UK and had been wrestling since I was sixteen, so I had a bit of a head start, but it was definitely one of the toughest things I have ever done.
I was in a class of about fourteen, I met a lot of weird and wonderful people there. There was Big Brandon, Terry The Indian, Little Brandon, my roommates Derrick and Camron (who now wrestles in VPW as Spiro). Hockey Ryan was another one, his favourite catchphrase was, "What you lookin' at, tough guy?" [laughs] His wife Veronica also trained with us, she went on to become Simply Luscious. Like I said, a lot of weird and wonderful people.
But training was so tough. They had bins put around the building for people to throw up in, we couldn't use the windows because Shawn usually had his truck parked below, so obviously that was a big no-no. It was pretty much what you'd expect from a real wrestling school. It was full time, hours of cardio every day, hours on the weights and on the mats. It was a few months before we even started training in the ring.
After the class was finished a select few were asked to work on the Texas Wrestling Alliance's shows, of course being an international superstar in the making I was one of those people. I can honestly say I took a beating for about ten matches in a row, but after that it was full steam ahead.
VPW Online: Do you still speak to HBK these days?
UK Kid: Yeah, I always call him at Christmas and we exchange gifts.
VPW Online: Really?
UK Kid: No, of course not. He calls me! Whenever I'm on the WWE shows in the UK he always makes an effort to stop and chat.
VPW Online: Speaking of the WWE UK shows, you've been involved in quite a few, tell us about that.
UK Kid: Well, they always have a number of UK wrestlers on the shows. Last year in Manchester I stepped into the ring with The Big Show. Yes, I lost, but I hadn't had a chance to warm up properly so he got off easy, had I won Vince would have been all over me like a rash.

VPW Online: Varsity Pro Wrestling also has a lot of connection with TNA, Total Non-Stop Action, have you ever aspired to work with them?
UK Kid: I was scheduled to be on a few shows in 2005 when I was last in the States, but I broke my heel so had to cancel. Since then I've beaten Kip James within an inch of his life so many times that they told me I could work for them the next time I'm in States.
VPW Online: The last time you stepped into the ring with Kip James you lost.
UK Kid: Next question!
VPW Online: OK then. You call yourself the "International Superstar", what does one have to do to become an international superstar?
VPW Online: That's an easy question. It takes, and of course I speak from experience, ten years of hard work and global traveling, wrestling for the best companies in the world against the best wrestlers in the world. Of course you've got to have a superstar physique so daily weight training and two hours of cardio a day to burn off those excess calories. Like myself you should have a strict diet of chick, steak, ham, pasta, potatoes and jelly beans.
Four hundred sit ups, two hundred push ups and seventeen star jumps before bed. No more than seventeen as this exercise can cause stress on your joints. And then most importantly six hours and forty five minutes of deep sleep before doing it all over again! Twelve raw eggs morning and night don't hurt either.
VPW Online: With that in mind, why do you insist on telling every you can, at every opportunity you get, that you are an international superstars. Wouldn't you rather let your skills do the talking?
UK Kid: If you did my daily routine wouldn't you want to let people know?
VPW Online: Fair enough. Well, it's been a pleasure talking to you. I have just one more question, what does The UK Kid have in store for Varsity Pro Wrestling?
UK Kid: Well, as you know and I'm sure agree, I think I'm very talented. In fact I think my name will go down in the history books! I may have taken n a few losses last year but come February I will be at the top of my game, I intend on stealing the show night after night and getting my hand raised every single time, proving that VPW's British wrestlers are better than those greasy Yanks.
